Meet scientists: Online June 10th 2025
An opportunity for home-educated students to meet scientists working in Biomolecular and Biophysical Studies, online.
The format of this event will be slightly different to usual.
It's all rather short notice, so I can't send you advance details of what each scientist is researching. They also won't yet have received the same training as usual about communicating their science effectively to children, but they'll be keen to give it a go! For this reason, I've kept this session for the older age groups, but as with everything I do, the age is just a guide. You know your child best and if you think they'll get something out of it that's fine, just sign them up in the closest age group. I'll be there making sure everything goes smoothly of course, and helping to bridge any communication gaps!
Broadly speaking, they'll all be researching detailed aspects of topics such as:
- The development of resistance to antibiotics in bacteria and development of new antibiotic drugs
- How aspects of the skeleton have evolved and formed
- How medicines and drugs interact at a molecular level with cell function
- Developing and testing new compounds for the treatment of a range of infections an diseases
There will be between 30 and 40 scientists in a room with me (we'll all be joining from one screen from a conference room at the University of Bath), and a few of them will explain something about what they're researching. Children can ask them questions about their research specifically, or about anything to do with working in science generally. Perhaps they'll want to know how they got to where they are now? What their day to day life is like or how much time they spend at a computer / in the lab or elsewhere etc. Children may like to think through questions like this in advance if they wish.
When? How?
Tuesday June 10th 2025
Time: 3.20 to 3.50pm (BST)
How: Zoom (join by a link online): I'll send you the link within 48 hours of receiving your booking.
Cost
There is no cost to join these events. Simply checkout as if you were paying. You will not be charged and you will not need to enter any payment information.
Places are limited, so please only sign up if you have every intention of attending.
Please bear in mind that if you simply don't turn up you will have deprived someone else of the opportunity to attend.
Siblings
Please complete one booking per child, selecting the appropriate age group for each (you can "add to cart" then checkout in one go). All age groups will attend the same session and siblings are welcome to attend together, or from one screen if online. The age groups simply allow me to ensure a spread of ages can take part.
How do I join?
The online meeting is on Zoom.
Upon booking, you will be sent joining instructions, guidance and a registration form to complete for each child attending (please check your spam folder). This will give you the opportunity to let us know what name you would like on their certificate of attendance, and to let us know of any specific needs or requirements your child has.
After attending you will be sent an electronic certificate of attendance for each registered child who took part. Please note this may take up to a week to arrive in your inbox.
